How to Select a Tennis Racquet?

When it comes to choosing a tennis racquet, regardless if you are a beginner or budding pro, the two key considerations are weight and head size. Lighter tennis racquets offer more control but sacrifice power. Inversely, heavier racquets require more strength to use them properly. Head size also determines the size of the 'sweet spot' on a racquets strings. The bigger the head size, the bigger the sweet spot and the more power generated. Smaller head sizes offer better control but a smaller 'sweet spot'.

For beginners, a tennis racquet that is lighter with a bigger head size is a good starting point. Intermediate and advanced players who are more consistent in their hits and are stronger typically benefit from heavier racquets with a smaller head size. How to Measure Tennis Racquet Size?

The two main areas that need to be measured when choosing a tennis racquet it head size and grip length. Head size is typically pre-calculated by the manufacturer and should be easily found on the product packaging. For the grip, follow these steps:

1. Hold you hand out in front of you with your palm facing up, keeping your fingers straight.
2. Put the lower end of a rule in the middle of your palm, and line it up with your ring finger.
3. Measure from the middle of your palm to the tip of your ring finger.

Naturally, you will want to choose a tennis racquet with a grip similar in length to your calculated grip length above.

What is a Tennis Racquet Made From?

Tennis racquets are made from a variety of lightweight materials, with the most popular being graphite. This material provides the best balance between being lightweight, durable, and cost-effective. Carbon fibre is another step up, boasting even more durability and weight-savings, however, the price reflects these features. Some racquets are made from aluminium, which is less durable and slightly heavier, although much more cost-effective.

How Long Do Tennis Racquets Last?

The lifespan of your tennis racquet typically comes down to how much stress is put on the frame. The strings are a consumable item and are meant to be replaced, however, the more often you re-string your racquet, its exposure to extreme temperatures, or if it's damaged while playing all factor into how long it will last. For advanced players who train and compete once a week then their racquet may only last a few years.

On the other hand, occasional recreational players may find their racquet lasts many more years when stored properly.
