How to Choose Cricket Pads?

Having the right cricket pads will boost your confidence when facing down bowlers while giving you the flexibility to sprint with ease. Cricket pads come in many different sizes, all the way from youth small to adult large. To find the right size for you, measure the middle of your knee to your instep - where the tongue of your shoe would sit. Other features such as the level of padding, the weight of the pads, material, and design should also be considered, but making sure they are the right size is key.

How Should Cricket Pads Fit?

Cricket batting pads should fit comfortably over your shins and knees. When wearing cricket pads, your knee cap should be centred in the knee roll. If your knee is two or more centimetres above or below the knee roll, then you will need to size up or down your pads accordingly. The straps on the back of the pads should comfortably wrap behind your calves and not chafe or rub if they move.

How to Clean Cricket Pads?

Cleaning cricket pads is a quick and easy process. Brush the exterior of the pads using a soft bristle brush to remove any dirt or debris. You can use a damp cloth the also wipe down the pads if they are very dirty. Most pads come with a detachable inner liner, which you can remove and wash separately from the pads. Read the manufacturer's instructions prior to cleaning these, as some are machine washable, and others will require handwashing.

How to Identify Left & Right Cricket Pads?

Most cricket pads will have left and right markers on them to make sure you are wearing the correct pad on the correct leg. However, your leading-leg pad should have wider wings than your back leg pad. For example, if you are right-handed, your leg left pad will have a wider wing than the right leg, and vice-versa for left-handed players.

How to Put on Cricket Pads?

Once you've chosen the correct size pads, putting them on will become second nature. Most modern cricket pads use velcro straps to secure them to your legs. First, undo the velcro straps and slide your leg through. Make sure the bottom on the pad sits above the tongue of your shoe, and that your knee fits into the knee roll. Tighten the velcro straps up around the back of your legs so the pads are on firmly. Make sure the straps aren't twisted or rolled.

What Are Cricket Pads Made From?

Traditionally, cricket batting pads had a leather exterior and cane padding. These days, some brands still utilise cane rods for their bolsters, however, high-density foam is often used instead of, or alongside the cane rods, since it is lighter and provides similar levels of protection. For the exterior, leather is still sometimes used, though synthetic PU is become increasingly popular due to its durability.
