How to Choose a Smart Watch?

Whether you love to run, work out at the gym, cycle, hike, golf or more, when it comes to choosing the right smart watch there are a few factors you should consider.

1. Check to if the smart watch is compatible with your phone's operating system. For example, Apple Watch only works with iOS, and newer Samsung Galaxy smart watches only work with android devices. However, other brands such as Fitbit work with both.

2. Consider the features you want out of your smart watch. Most smart watches offer fitness tracking, notifications, and music controls. Some may have additional features like built-in GPS, NFC payments, water protection and voice assistants which you may find useful in day-to-day life. It also might be worth looking into sport-specific smart watches, such as for running and swimming. These have curated features specifically chosen for these activities.

3. Battery Life: If you're constantly on the go, look for a smart watch with a long battery life, especially if you plan to use it for fitness tracking or outdoor activities like hiking or bush walking. Hybrid smart watches which usually feature a more traditional analog face tend to have the longest battery life. Likewise, some smart watches feature in-built solar panels which further extend the battery life again.

4. Design: Smart watches come a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colours and designs, giving you a plenty of choices to fit your personal style. Don't forget that many smart watches have interchangeable bands, so if you like the watch face but not the band, that can likely be easily changed. Similarly, digital smart watches will feature an array of stylish faces, allowing you to customise it to your liking.

5. Durability: If you plan on using your smartwatch for outdoor activities, such as trail running or swimming, or in rugged environments, choose a model that is durable and water-resistant. The best way to know how rugged a smart watch is the IP rating, which assigns two numbers based on how dust and water resistant a smart watch is. You can also looking out for the ATM rating, will give you an indication of how well a smart watch can handle water pressure and depth. Read more in our guide to buying a smart watch.
