How to Choose a Cricket Bat?

Which cricket bat you should choose will typically depend on what size you need. The shorter you are, the shorter the bat you will need. Likewise, the taller you are, the longer the bat you'll need to comfortably use. The right-size cricket bat should have the top of its handle rest at the same height as the top of your wrist when your hands and the bat are down by your sides. What are Cricket Bats Made From?

Cricket bats are usually made from either English Willow or Kashmir Willow, two different types of wood. English Willow has a white appearance and is grown specifically to create cricket bats out of. English Willow is also graded from Grade 1 to Grade 6, with Grade 1 being the highest quality wood. Cricket bats can also be made from Kashmir Willow, which is darker and harder than English Willow. These bats tend to be heavier, however, much more cost-effective, making them great for recreational players and those just getting into the sport.

How to Hold a Cricket Bat?

There are many different ways to hold a cricket bat, but the most common is the V-Grip. To do so, place your bat on the ground with the flat side down. Next, hold the handle by making a V between your thumb and indexing finger, with the V pointing down. Have your right hand at the bottom, and left hand at the top. Wrap your fingers around the grip, making sure the bottom hand is held somewhat loosely and is comfortable.

How Long to Knock in a Cricket Bat?

Before using your brand new cricket bat, you need to 'knocking in' it, which hardens and conditioners the flat blade of the bat. Doing this prevents the blade from cracking, increasing its lifespan. Using either a cricket ball or wooden cricket bat mallet, this process will take between 4 to 6 hours, depending on the softness of the willow.

How to Oil a Cricket Bat?

Done before knocking in your new cricket bat, oiling your bat also helps to increase its lifespan and create a protective outer coating on your bat. Do oil your bat, lightly sand with 180 - 200 grit sandpaper, followed by applying roughly a 50 cent piece worth of oil to the surface. Use a piece of cloth to rub the oil into the bat, except for the grip and splice. Let the bat dry overnight standing up. You will need to oil your bat multiple times before your first use, though on third and fourth occasion you only need to do the blade. You should do the oiling process alongside the knocking in process, where after the first two hours of knocking you should oil the bat, then again at the four-hour mark, then again when the knocking in is complete.
