WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND BOXING DAY?

Originating in England back in the Middle Ages, Boxing Day was traditionally used as the occasion to give gifts and charity to those less fortunate. However, as time has gone on, Boxing Day is now seen as a shopping holiday and a day of relaxation after the busy Christmas period. Similar to the Black Friday / Cyber Monday shopping holidays, Boxing Day primarily used to be an in-store event. In recent years, Boxing Day sales are now offered both in-store and online, giving shoppers the choice to shop at their favourite spots or relax at home while still enjoying the post-Christmas deals to be had.

In Australia, Boxing Day is also the start of two major sporting events, with the first being the Boxing Day Test which will see the Australian Cricket Team take on England in 2025. The second event is the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race which sets sail from Nielsen Park in Sydney Harbour.
