How to Use Resistance Bands?

Your overall goal for the workout will determine how you can use a resistance band. However, resistance bands are easy to integrate into almost every type of workout, from cardio based to strength and weight lifting.

Tube resistance bands, like our PTP PowerTube Elite range, can be tied around a door handle, sturdy exercise machine or weight rack and used for both upper and lower body movements.

Fabric non-slip resistance bands are great for building up a sweat and increasing your heart rate without lifting heavy. Slip them on over your knees to increase the resistance during hip thrusts or side steps to raise the burn in your quads and glutes.

Can You Build Muscle With Resistance Bands?

Yes, resistance bands can help you increase muscle mass the same way free weights do. Resistance bands put pressure on your muscles, forcing them to work against the resistance, creating muscle hypertrophy and causing them to get bigger over time.

Do Resistance Bands Work?

Yes, resistance bands work well in any workout routine. They are designed to increase heart rate, muscle strength and improve overall body tone.

Which Resistance Band To Use?

There are several types of resistance bands that are designed slightly differently to provide a unique feel when used.

Tube Bands: Tube resistance bands have a flexible, tube-like centre and built-in heavy-duty metal clips, so you can easily switch between upper body and lower body workouts. The anti-snapping Inner Cord Technology provides maximum durability while preventing the tube from overstretching. These resistance bands are great for pressing and pulling exercises, like chest presses, curls, back rows and shoulder presses.

Rubber Mini Bands: Rubber mini bands are great for increasing strength and mobility in your lower body. They come in a range of sizes and strengths, usually categorised by different colours. Slip them on over your knees or ankles to activate your glutes and lower body.

Non-Slip Fabric Bands: Similar to rubber mini bands, non-slip bands are usually thicker and made with a durable fabric covering, great for lower body movements, like hip thrusts, squats, donkey kicks and more. Non-slip bands aren't great for upper body workouts as they are not very flexible.

How To Use Resistance Bands For Pull Ups, Weights and Squats?

Pull Ups: Choose a resistance band with a lot of length and moveability, like the PTP SuperBands. Loop one end over a weightlifting rack or sturdy bar and pull the other end through the loop to create a knot. Standing on a stool or box, place your hand on the bar in a pull-up position, place your foot into the band and pull up. For beginners, it's best to start in the pull-up position and lower your body down slowly to build up your arm and back muscles.

Squats and Weights: Using a non-slip band or mini band, slip it over your knees while you squat or lift. This will help increase your muscle's response to the weight while fighting the resistance. Make sure your feet are pointing slightly outward when you squat to feel the weight in your quads and keep your knees facing forward.

Can Resistance Bands Snap?

If your resistance band get dry, it can become prone to snapping. Leaving your gym equipment in the sun or out in dry, hot conditions can cause it to become brittle and hard, especially latex resistance bands, making them more likely to snap or break, however, PTP bands are designed with an anti-snapping inner cord technology to protect against the band snapping

How Long Do Resistance Bands Last?

Depending upon the overall frequency of use and quality, resistance bands can last up to 6 months to a year. In some cases, they will last a lot longer, especially if only being used in a home gym or used infrequently.
