Running in the rain: What's really slowing you down?
It's a secret club only runners know about - the freedom of running in the rain. Raindrops can be a welcome addition to a run - keeping you cool and feeling fresh. However, torrential downpours can really put a dampener on your training regime.
With the right running gear, rainy days don't have to slow you down.
Waterproof jackets
Look for a lightweight jacket made from breathable fabric and a mesh layer for added protection from moisture. What's the point of keeping the rain away, if wearing a waterproof jacket also means trapping the sweat in as your body temperature rises? Check the label to ensure the jacket is waterproof, not just water resistant. While water resistant clothing can give you some degree of protection from the elements, they're not designed to withstand heavy downpours.
Weather resistant running gear
Lightweight running gear uses high performance technology to keep you dry and offer breathability. Avoid running in cotton clothing during rain as it soaks up water quickly, becoming heavy and slowing you down.
Most sports brands have a range of water resistant clothing, using layered technology with elastane to protect you from mother-nature, such as the Nike Shield range which helps block out the wind and rain.
