It's no secret that cycling can be seriously good for you. Despite being low impact in practice it is high impact in results, helping to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, depression, obesity and arthritis. Along with these obvious health benefits come a whole host of other perks; not least of which is weight loss and body sculpting!
Pedal Away The Pounds!
Cycling gets your heart pounding which increases your body's ability to burn fat and build muscle. The Victorian Government's Better Health Channel recommends combining cycling with a healthy eating plan for best results, building up your level of activity gradually and varying the pace, terrain and incline on which you cycle.
Incorporate cycling into your everyday routine by using it as your primary form of transport. Instead of driving to and from work, bike in, or fit in regular early morning sessions to ensure you're getting at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise in per day.
Your legs work exceptionally hard when you're cycling, with your quadriceps, hamstrings, calves and glutes being honed and strengthened during the activity. If you weigh 80 kilograms you could burn more than 650 calories with an hour's worth of cycling and you'll have the added benefit of toned legs and firm bum. Add in some hills and off-road tracks for a full body workout - keeping your balance and gripping the handlebars will work your core and arms.
