Unless you're a dedicated fitness-junkie, if asked when you felt at your fittest, you might answer that it was during your primary school days. Kids seem to be able to run around for hours without tiring: Something that could be to do with the endless amount of active games they engage in.
Take a leaf out of their books and go back to school with these fun (and energetic!) school yard games that will get your heart-rate going.
This game barely needs an introduction - most people would have played it during their early years, under the name of tiggy, tag or cops and robbers - the list goes on.
While you might feel a little childish, abandoning your inhibitions and rounding up a group of friends for a game of tag will be a great way to reminisce and get you sweating. After all, it's pretty much a glorified version of running - but the competitive edge will ensure you forget about the pain!
Some of the most effective fitness trends require a lot less equipment than you'd find in a fancy gym these days. Skipping is an incredibly aerobic activity that is guaranteed to make you puff - and all you need is a piece of rope!
Play it in groups with one person at each end and one in the middle, or by yourself with a smaller skipping rope. If you really want to challenge yourself, create mini circuits by hopping on both legs, one leg, and even crisscrossing your rope.
The classic game of hopscotch may not be the biggest cardio workout, but you can spin your own twist on this one. Why not try customising a giant hopscotch with different activities on each square? Think push-ups, sit-ups and even pop a couple of dumbbells on some of the squares. Then play as normal - throw your pebble or marker onto one of the squares, hop to it, then complete the corresponding exercise. School yard fun gone fitness-friendly!
